Doctors have been amazed by the “fighting spirit” shown by an Armagh man who suffered a devastating workplace accident in Philadelphia last month.

Sean Hughes, who moved to the United States five years ago, was working as a joiner on a site when he suffered a fall from scaffolding on December 11.

The 27-year-old, originally from the Grange, was placed in an induced coma and underwent a series of stringent tests.

His family were told he suffered catastrophic head injuries as a result. Wife Emily and two-year-old son Sean Paul have been by his side since.

However, a month on and signs are much more positive.

Now a member of Young Ireland’s GFC in Havertown, Pennsylvania, Sean, a talented player, grew up a Pearse Og clubman.

And the Armagh city club shared an update on his condition.

“Sean’s aunt and his father have been in contact with us to give an update on Sean’s health,” they said.

“They have received positive news this week. After Sean had an operation to clear an abscess he has started to become stronger and indeed is now responding to messages. The doctors are amazed with his fighting spirit.”

They added: “He has been able to move his shoulders and put his tongue out.

“His parents have put a Pearse Óg jersey and Armagh jersey beside his bed and he has made a response to this.

“His family acknowledge the great support from the Ógs and people in general in Armagh.

“He has a long way to go and they ask for our continued prayers to help with the recovery.

“Please continue to pray for Sean and send your messages of support as it gives the family a great boost.”

A fundraising drive Stateside has amassed $93,000 while his family at home in Armagh has raised £26,000 to help, sums the family have expressed great gratitude to the public for.
