A Lithuanian national who told police that he believed he covered to drive a car on his mother’s insurance policy has been fined and given eight penalty points.
Kristupas Tuzulinas, 21, of Navan Street, Armagh, appeared at city Magistrates’ last Tuesday charged with driving whilst uninsured.
Court heard that the defendant was pulled over by police on Irish Street, in the city, driving a white Ford Focus on January 2, this year, at around 5.55pm.
Police had stopped the car as it did not have a valid insurance.
Tuzulinas explained that the car belonged to his mother and that she had an insurance policy for it which covered him.
Police discovered that this insurance policy had been cancelled on December 22.
Defence counsel stated that this had been a mistake by the defendant now “accepts he knew he wasn’t insured”.
District Judge Paul Copeland ordered Tuzulinas to pay a fine of £250, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
The defendant was also given eight penalty points on his licence.
