A family of a young woman who lost her battle with cancer have set up a fundraising campaign in her memory.
The Curry family from Middletown has launched the fundraiser for the Southern Area Hospice Newry, in memory of their beloved daughter Shirley.
Shirley sadly passed away in 2015, at just 31, following her battle with cancer.
‘Shirley’s Summit’, a sponsored climb of Croagh Patrick in Westport, Co Mayo will take place on Saturday, April 29.
Shirley’s parents, brothers, sister, fiancé and 8-year-old son, are asking people to join them in reaching the top of Ireland’s holiest mountain to remember Shirley and raise money for the Hospice.
Shirley’s father, Peter, explains: “During her illness, the care and support that Shirley, and indeed our family, received from Newry Hospice was incredible. Every member of the team went above and beyond the call of duty during those difficult days.
“For those that knew Shirley, her beautiful smile, wicked sense of humour and love of life was infectious. She faced her illness with such courage, humility and determination. We miss her sorely but take comfort in the level of care that she received from the Hospice towards the end of her life.
“We want to do what we can to help ensure that other people can continue to benefit from the specialist services that they provide.”
Shirley’s mother, Teresa added: “We hope as many people as possible will join us on ‘Shirley’s Summit’ or support us through Just Giving. By coming together we will reach a new height and fundraise for Newry Hospice in memory of Shirley – her life on earth is gone but lives on in each of our hearts.”
Denise Doyle, Community Fundraising Officer, Southern Area Hospice commented: “We are delighted that Shirley’s family and friends are coming together to remember her in a very special way. This will be a great tribute to such a loving woman and also will help other families who will unfortunately go through the same. The Southern Area Hospice relies heavily on individuals and groups doing fundraising like this and we would urge everyone to get behind them and support their local Hospice”.
