Friends of a St Catherine’s College student who died last month after a brave battle with cancer are planning a fundraising night in her memory.
Eighteen-year-old Rebecca Haughey passed away at Belfast City Hospital at the start of September.
Rebecca, from Lurgan, was a Sixth Form student at the Armagh school.
Remarkably, she wrote of her determination to beat her cancer on social media.
But family and friends were left devastated after she lost her brave battle.
Within days, mum Colette began an appeal to raise money for CLIC Sargent, to thank the charity for all the help and support which it had given to the family during very difficult times.
Now Rebecca’s friends are also planning to raise money for the same charity.
A fundraising event is being planned for the Auction Rooms at Moy on Friday, November 11.
The girls – Rayna Gillespie, Niamh McCreanor, Bronagh Black, Meabh Rafferty, Aine Mcgivern, Micheala Maginess, Rachel Oliver, Meabh McElmeel, Meghan McArdle, Ellen Donnelly and Viktorija Kubiliute – are hoping for great support from the local community.
It will be a fitting tribute to Rebecca and will include a raffle with some great prizes up for grabs.
Rayna said they wanted to do something to help others while paying tribute to Rebecca.
She told Armagh I : “We wanted to do this fundraiser because we wanted to raise awareness of CLIC Sargent who provide so much support to families who are going through this difficult time.
“We also wanted to help those who helped Rebecca and her family.”
Niamh said all of the girls were inspired by Rebecca and were indebted to the charity for the support which it had provided.
She said: “Rebecca was a dear friend who meant so much to all of us. We wanted to do this fundraiser in her memory.
“We want to show others the valuable work that CLIC Sargent carry out and to show how great this cause is.”
Admission to the fundraising evening at Moy is just £5 and proceeds will help the charity to deliver invaluable support and help to others – like Rebecca and her family – when they need it most.
Please, please show your support to this fantastic effort from these young ladies.
