The funeral of a young Armagh man, who died in a tragic swimming accident in the Dominican Republic over three weeks ago, will take place on Monday.

Twenty-nine-year-old James Gribben passed away on Sunday, March 23, leaving his family devastated.

With the assistance of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, James’ remains have now been returned home for his funeral and private cremation after the weekend.

James is described in a funeral notice as the “loving son of John and Aideen, dearest brother of Tomas, Brendan and Henry”.

James will be reposing at the family home 32 Rosemount Park BT60 1AX, on Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13, from 12noon until 8pm.

His funeral will take place on Monday, April 14, to St.Patrick’s Cathedral for 12 noon Mass, followed by private cremation.

James’ father, John, speaking to the Irish News after news of the accident in the Caribbean, said the family had been “devastated by this unexpected tragedy”.

“James was a wonderful son with a big personality,” he said. “He will be sadly missed by his family and circle of friends.”

James was an avid Armagh GAA fan and a former player at the City of Armagh Rugby Club. He had worked for the operations team at S&W Wholesale in Newry.

Family, friends and colleagues will now be preparing to pay tribute to James – described by his workplace as a “diligent, kind and gentle man” – as his funeral takes place.

The family, meanwhile, have requested no flowers, but asked that donations, if desired, be made for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust via the donation box in the family home.

All further enquiries are being directed to J.J. McArdle & Sons 37 Thomas Street, Armagh.
