‘Hike the Reek’ and help fundraising drive to repair cathedral steps

This is the 150th year since the dedication of the cathedral, and the fundraising programme is designed to help preserve it for future generations

A fundraising campaign has begun to pay for work to restore the 52 steps leading up to St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh (Roman Catholic).

People of the Archdiocese of Armagh and further afield are being invited to “step up to the mark” and join in Hike the Reek, a pilgrimage to the top of Croagh Patrick.

The climb to the summit of Ireland’s holy mountain will take place on Saturday, June 17.

According to traditions and accounts, in 441 AD, St Patrick spent the 40 days of Lent praying and fasting on the mountain top as part of his effort to convert Ireland to Christianity.

This is the 150th year since the dedication of the cathedral, and the fundraising programme is designed to help preserve it for future generations.

Fr Peter McAnenly, administrator of the cathedral, said a lot of repointing and maintenance work has been done over the last few years, to protect the building from water and leaks and that more needs to be done in the near future.

“Such is the nature of old buildings that they constantly need work and attention and major work is to begin shortly to restore the 52 steps which lead to the beautiful and well-known building,” he said.

He said that given the costs associated with the work and to help protect the building for future generations, people are being invited to honour those who have supported the cathedral over the last 150 years, by helping to generate much-needed funds.

Anyone interested in taking part is being asked to raise a minimum of £150 or €150.

On the day, Mass will be celebrated at the summit at 12 noon and 2pm.
