Learner driver caught twice in three months driving illegally in Armagh

A Bulgarian national has been banned from driving for six months after being caught twice within three months for driving without “L” plates, a court has heard.

Ivo Zhekov, 43, of Callan Bridge Park, Armagh, appeared at the city Magistrates’ on Tuesday charged with two counts of driving without “L” plates, two counts of being an unaccompanied learner and one count of no insurance.

Court heard that the defendant was stopped by police on September 3, last year, driving a Mercedes on the Lonsdale Road, Armagh, at around 8am, after the car was flagged as being uninsured.

Zhekov was alone in the car and produce his provisional licence.

It was noted by police that the car did not display “L” plates.

The defendant was again stopped by police on the Moy Road, Armagh, on November 23, last year, at around 1pm.

Once more the defendant produced his provisional licence and was not accompanied by a driver or displaying “L” plates.

District Judge Paul Copeland banned the defendant from driving for six months, ordered him to pay a fine of £355 and placed six penalty points on his licence.
