Man who told assault victim ‘we don’t want your sort around here’ to await sentence

Prosecution commented that the injured party was Protestant and accepted the assault was "aggravated by hostility"

A man who told his assault victim “we don’t want your sort around here” must wait until next month to learn his fate.

Adjourning the 28-year-old’s sentencing, the district judge commented: “He was born in 1994. What age was he when the Good Friday Agreement was signed? Three or four years of age.”

Jonathan Brady, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to one charge of common assault at Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry, on Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on October 11, police were called to the defendant’s parents’ home and officers searched for Brady but could not locate him.

Shortly later, police received a 999 call from a male who claimed to have been assaulted by this defendant whilst he was fixing a camera issue on the driveway of his home.

He stated Brady had approached him before punching him four or five times to the left side of his face with both fists as he lay on the ground.

Following the altercation, the injured party said that the defendant had remarked: “We don’t want your sort around here.”

District Judge Bernie Kelly enquired as to what this phrase was in relation to. Prosecution commented that the injured party was Protestant and accepted the assault was “aggravated by hostility”.

District Judge Kelly stated: “He was born in 1994. What age was he when the Good Friday Agreement was signed? Three or four years of age. But he is more than happy to throw his weight around based on this wholly outdated concept.

“I wouldn’t tolerate that sort of behaviour.”

The case was adjourned until April 12 for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
