Markethill collision: Five people remain in serious condition in hospital

Patrick Grimley

Three of the eight people rushed to hospital following a serious road traffic collision between Newry and Markethill on Saturday morning have since been discharged, police have confirmed.

Sadly, 40-year-old father-of-three Patrick Grimley lost his life at the scene of the multi-vehicle collision on the Gosford Road.

He was returning from Dundalk with friends having celebrated turning 40 just a few days prior.

Five others remain in hospital — three women and two men. Among them is Patrick’s wife, Ciera Grimley.

Ciera’s sister has asked family, friends and the wider community to keep Ciera “in your thoughts and prayers…she is still critically ill in ICU and we pray she pulls through and keeps fighting. A long road ahead”.

A number of others remain gravely ill in hospital. The Madden community, despite reeling from the devastation, have come together in support of the young families impacted by this horrific incident.
