New trial date confirmed for man accused of causing death of three people in Marketill crash

Patrick and Ciera Grimley and Ciara McElvanna

The trial of a 20-year-old man accused of causing a four-vehicle car crash which claimed the lives of three people, and seriously injured four more, will take place in April.

The trial of Josh McGleenan, from Ashveagh in Benburb, was fixed for March 16 but has been re-fixed for April 26 to suit all parties involved.

McGleenan, denied eight charges arising from a road traffic collision on the Gosford Road in Markethill on November 4, 2023.

The defendant is accused of causing the deaths of Ciara McElvanna, as well as husband and wife Patrick and Ciera Grimley by driving dangerously on the Gosford Road in Markethill.

He is also accused of four counts of causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving and a final charge of dangerous driving between Ashveagh, Benburb and the Gosford Road.

At Newry Crown Court on Tuesday, prosecutor Geraldine McCullough confirmed that the March 16 date, which was subsequently moved to March 18 on account of the public holiday, was not suitable.

However, she said “it does [now] suit all of the witnesses and the next of kin and my learned friends and the court”.

His Honour Judge Paul Ramsey agreed to fix the trial date for April 26 with the anticipation of no further delays.

The case was listed for review on March 18.

McGleenan remains on continuing bail in the meantime.
