A Newry man has appeared in court on a litany of charges this morning (Tuesday) after two weekend burglaries in the Armagh area.
Michael John Maughan (48), of no-fixed-abode, appeared via videolink from Lurgan custody before Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry Courthouse.
He is charged with two counts of aggravated vehicle taking causing damage to the vehicle, and two counts of burglary with intent to steal, alongside a number of driving offences.
Court papers state the incidents are alleged to have occurred on June 9, with one of the burglaries alleged to have occurred on the Tandragee Road, and the other on the Tullynawood Road in Darkley.
At the outset of the hearing, a defence lawyer informed the court that a bail address was not available so no application for bail would be made at this time.
The charges were then read to Maughan, who spoke to confirm his name and date-of-birth.
He was asked if he understood the charges against him, he simply replied, “yes”.
A police Detective Constable confirmed they could connect the accused to the charges.
District Judge Anne Marshall remanded the defendant into custody, to appear before the court via videolink on July 9.
