Police found cannabis in kitchen cupboard during search of woman’s home

The district judge remarked: 'Your involvement in this distasteful and criminal offence is still not known'

A woman who was caught with cannabis after a search of her home will be sentenced next month.

The 22-year-old’s solicitor told court: “She has no previous of a similar nature. This is a young lady who has had some difficulties in the past with drink which, if you look at her record, has led to the public order offences.”

Nadine Cowley, of Hill Street, Gilford pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Prosecution outlined that on October 9, at 12.30pm, police conducted a search under warrant of the defendant’s home on Hill Street, Gilford.

Whilst inside, officers detected a strong smell of cannabis and Cowley, the only occupant, was in the kitchen of the property.

A grinder containing 0.5g of herbal cannabis was found in a kitchen cupboard. In a notebook interview the defendant made no comment to questions.

Defence solicitor Philip Reid stated: “This was a small amount in a kitchen cupboard. A notebook interview was conducted in the property but she has since accepted culpability.

“She has no previous of a similar nature. This is a young lady who has had some difficulties in the past with drink which, if you look at her record, has led to the public order offences.”

He added: “She is currently working with probation and progressing. She is trying to put things right in her life.”

District Judge Paul Copeland stated: “Police had some suspicion about what was going on in your house. Your involvement in this distasteful and criminal offence is still not known.

“I am going to request a specific sentence report to look at the possibility of community service.”

The case was adjourned until March 31 for sentencing.
