The third annual golf day in memory of popular Armagh man, Harry McGeough, has turned out to be a roaring success, raising £5,600 for Marie Curie.
The event, which has been organised ever since Harry passed away, took place on Friday, September 1 at the County Armagh Golf Club.
Harry died on September 15, 2020, two days after contracting Covid-19.
The 75-year-old had been battling cancer for seven years prior to his passing.
And in recognition of the care he received at Craigavon Area Hospital, and in memory of his life, Harry’s wife Brenda set up ‘Harry’s Day’, which has become an annual event.
Harry, who was affectionately referred to as ‘The Legend’, was a well-known Armagh man who was involved in a number of local sporting clubs and who also sang at weddings and bars.
The huge figure of £5,600 tops last year’s already amazing result, which saw a total of £4,995 raised for Chest, Heart & Stroke NI.
This year’s event saw 72 golfers take to the course with the event supported by 42 local business sponsors including the main sponsor for the event – SB Fibre Comms.
Speaking after the event, Brenda said: “The day went very well. The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed themselves.
“I had three friends over from Wales who collected over £300 on the 18th tee, challenging every golfer to get their ball onto the green, which went down a treat and added a bit of fun to the last hole!
“We had two new shields this year. The Ladies shield winner was Francine Donnelly and a new Junior shield this year went to Fionn Murphy.
“Also every golfer had a goodie bag of refreshments kindly donated by Patricia and Gerard Gamble, and JPs Chippy sponsored food for every golfer.”
She added: “I also want to thank those who donated raffle prizes that collected over £300.
“We’re looking forward to Harry’s Day 2024! As I’ve always said: next year… bigger and better!”
