An action group opposed to certain aspects of a planned North-South Interconnector have spoken out on what they sat will be to the detriment of the rural countryside.
Speaking ahead of this week’s public inquiry into the North-South Interconnector, a SEAT (Safe Electricity Armagh and Tyrone) spokesperson said: “SEAT completely understands the need for a better energy supply and we all want an improved service – but it must be safe and environmentally responsible.
“We want to make it absolutely clear that SEAT is not opposing the interconnector itself. We are however vehemently opposed to the use of dangerous 400kV overhead power lines and pylons.
“The reality of a series of large electricity pylons running through farmland and villages will have a negative impact. The size of the pylons and their frequency throughout the landscape will be detrimental to health, the value of local property, farming, and the beautiful unspoilt rural countryside of Armagh and Tyrone.
“We are proposing the undergrounding of the cable to reduce its impact on people’s health, the landscape, farming and tourism. We believe that undergrounding presents a modern, safe and more environmentally responsible option.
“This is a very clear message we will be bringing to the public inquiry in Armagh this week.”
