An Armagh man involved in a fight, which broke out in a beer garden in the city on St Patrick’s Day, has been sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

The judge told the defendant that he must do what he is told, when he is told, after handing down the sentence.

Christopher McDonagh, 25, of Alexander Road, appeared for sentencing on one count of disorderly behaviour in licensed premises at the City’s Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was one of three involved in the incident with Thomas Noel Maughan, 31, of Drumarg Park, being sentenced to 200 hours of community service last week.

Prosecution outlined the facts on the case, that on March 17, at around 1am, police were called to Armagh City Hotel to reports of three males fighting in the beer garden.

When officers arrived, they spoke to Maughan in the foyer and observed he had several lacerations to his head which were bleeding profusely.

He alleged that he had been hit on the head with a glass.

CCTV viewed by police showed the defendant and the two co-accused in a physical fight.

District Judge Paul Copeland stated: “Given the recommendation in the report, I intend to impose of community order, it is a very comprehensive report”.

McDonagh was sentenced to an enhanced combination order consisting of 12 months probation and 80 hours of community service.

A requirement of the defendant’s probation was that he attend a 15-day rehabilitation program.

Defence barrister Conor Coulter informed the court that McDonagh now resided in Wigan in England and this is where this community order would be completed.

Judge Copeland said: “It is important that you behave in Wigan, it is a long way away but it simple do what you are told, when you are told.”
