St Malachy’s PS celebrate first school term in new building with Halloween assembly

There was a frightening sight at St Malachy’s Primary School in Armagh as pupils from P1–P7 were dressed to death for their annual Halloween assembly.

Along with celebrating the Halloween break, it was an extra-special day as the staff and pupils marked their first successful term in the temporary new school building at the former St Brigid’s High School site.

From witches to action men, the boys and ghouls were dressed in their spookiest and boo-tiful costumes – with a few K-pop–hunting demons running about the PE hall this year.

A very special presentation was also made to P4 pupil Anaoise McArdle, who won the Lú Festival of Light colouring competition. With over 500 entries from school pupils across the North and South of Ireland, Armagh pupil Anaoise’s colourful and imaginative design of St Peter’s Church in Drogheda was the star winner.

Trevor Connolly, CEO of Love Drogheda, proudly presented Anaoise with her award – tickets to Emerald Park for her and her family – at this morning’s Halloween assembly. Anaoise’s design will also be projected onto the walls of St Peter’s Church from 24–27 October during the Lú Festival of Light event.

Pupils who take part in the ‘buddy system’ were also treated to an extra-special surprise. The buddy system pairs a P7 pupil with a P1 pupil when they first start school. The P7 buddy helps their new cub settle into school life, and today the pairs met up and had fun making chocolate-covered apples!

As pupils prepared to break off for mid-term, each class enjoyed a special Halloween party with lots of sweets and treats – and, of course, a thriller movie to end the day.
