St Patrick’s Primary School, Armagh led tributes to a “truly special” former colleague and beloved dinner lady, Mary O’Connor.
Mary had been a valued member of the school’s catering team for many years and was incredibly popular with pupils and staff alike.
Following her regrettable passing yesterday (December 3), many within the community have taken the opportunity to share their fond memories of the wonderfully kind, reassuring and warm person that she was.
Speaking of Mary’s impact within the school, St Patrick’s Primary said: “All in St. Patrick’s were deeply saddened to learn today of the passing of our former colleague and dear friend, Mrs Mary O’Connor.
“Mary worked in our school for many years as part of our lunch staff and was truly a special member of our St. Patrick’s family.
“Mary was a warm, caring person who was loved by her colleagues and all pupils. Her kind nature meant she was often a safe, happy space for children to share their daily news, thoughts, and feelings.
“She brought comfort, joy, and reassurance to everyone around her. Hundreds of children throughout the years have benefitted from even just a wee chat with Mary on the yard at lunchtime.
“As a school community, we give thanks for Mary’s life and the love she shared so generously. We keep her family and friends in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
“Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.”
Proving her unforgettable presence, a former neighbour of Mary’s added: “So shocked and saddened to learn of Mary’s death. The loveliest lady and the fondest memories of being her neighbour growing up. Thinking of the whole family circle at this very sad time. RIP Mary.”
Another person said: “So so sad! Mary was a real lady just so kind and gentle. May you rest in peace Mary. Condolences to Michael and family may God bless you all at this very difficult time.”
A death notice described Mary as the beloved wife of Michael and loving mother to Michelle, Kevin, Gary, Kieran and Christopher, daughter of the late Jim (Ginger) and Jean and sister of the late Jim and Jeanene.
Requiem Mass will be held on Friday at St Patricks Cathedral for 11.00am with burial afterwards in St Patricks cemetery.
