Triple A quintet to take on Belfast Marathon for autism awareness

'We look forward to the challenge and will endeavour to do our best'

An Armagh-based group for adults with autism has put a team together to compete in the Belfast Marathon as part of Autism Awareness month.

Triple A has been providing leisure, community and activity for adults with autism and other learning disability from their Cathedral Road site since 2017.

Today, they have have between 18 and 19 members of all abilities and have continued to keep the group going through fundraising and the support of “good people”.

This year – for the first time – the group have put together a relay team of five runners to take on the Belfast Marathon on May 4.

One of the runners is Triple A Chairperson Bernie O’Connor, who said: “We look forward to the challenge and will endeavour to do our best.”

While the relay has been linked to Triple A’s month of events for Autism Awareness month – which runs for the full month of April – it has also been set up to help secure funds to go towards the group’s activities, outings and overheads.

Said Bernie: “We are delighted that we are able to offer this service for all our special people where we provide a safe place where all can socialise and take part in various activities. We know first hand just how much they all enjoy it.”

In just two weeks’ time, Bernie will be joined at the starting line by fellow teammates, Kieran O’Connor (Bernie’s husband), Ellie McKenna, Mark Hughes and Sean O’Connor.

Together, the quintet set themselves a target of just £100 a runner – a total of £500 for the charity.

However, they are delighted to have already raised just over £1,100 and are keen to keep this momentum going to better serve their community of incredibly “special people”.
