A launch event for the Special Olympics in Armagh had to be cancelled on advice by PSNI “following violent disturbances”, it has emerged.
The launch had been due to be held at the Armagh City Hotel on Thursday, June 11.
But Special Olympics Ireland confirmed the previous day that it had been cancelled with “great disappointment”.
Lord Mayor Mary O’Dowd, speaking at Monday’s monthly meeting, revealed that it had been called off due to unrest which flared across Northern Ireland in the aftermath of the horrific attack on Stephen Ogilvie in Belfast.
The recently-elected Lord Mayor, at the outset of the meeting and given recent tensions, had urged councillors taking part to be mindful of their words.
She said: “I wish to acknowledge the deeply concerning events that have taken place in recent weeks, including acts of racist violence, intimidation and targeting of ethnic minority communities.
“There is no place in our society for racism, hatred or violence. Everyone, regardless of their race, faith, background or nationality, has a right to feel safe and respected within the community.”
Turning to the planned launch in Armagh for the Special Olympics, she said it was “particularly disappointing” this had to be cancelled, “following violent disturbances, with police advising participants not to travel”.
Added Lord Mayor O’Dowd: “An occasion that should have been a celebration of inclusion, friendship and achievement, was unfortunately affected by fear and division.
“The council’s message must be clear. Our district is one that values diversity, respects differences and stands firmly against all forms of hatred and intimidation.”
And advising caution on how they conduct themselves, she urged elected representatives: “As we carry out our business this evening, I ask all members to be mindful of the words that we use and the tone we adopt.
“The decisions within this chamber have an impact beyond these walls and at times such as these our leadership and our example matter greatly.
“ I wish to acknowledge and thank all those within our communities, voluntary organisations, public services and statutory agencies who have worked tirelessly to support those affected, provided reassurance and promote calm solidarity.
“So I just want everybody to be mindful with words tonight.”
The Special Olympics, which were held in Dublin, went ahead, despite the cancellation of the official launch in Armagh, from Thursday, June 18 until Sunday, June 21.
