An Armagh woman who assaulted a police officer after being arrested for being disorderly in a licensed premises has been sentenced to one month in prison.

The deputy district judge told the 53-year-old: “You are about the same age as me. You don’t want to keep coming before the court…you need to address your issues or you will continue on this revolving door.”

Florence Margaret Agnew, of Legar Hill Park, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour in licensed premises and assault on police at Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry, on Tuesday via videolink from Hydebank.

Prosecution outlined that on April 23, last year, police received a report from the owner of Rafferty’s Bar, Armagh, stating that this defendant was acting disorderly at the premises.

He stated that Agnew, who was barred from entering, was shouting and swearing and refusing to leave.

Police attended the home of the defendant. Upon arrival she appeared intoxicated outside the property and was shouting at officers.

Agnew was arrested at 8.45pm, and whilst being conveyed into custody the defendant lunged at the officer who was driving, grabbing at his glasses.

The defendant had to be subsequently restrained and placed into a cell van.

Defence barrister Conor Coulter stated that alcohol had been a problem for his client and that conflicts had arisen with others in the area but she now had found a new address.

Deputy District Judge Brian Archer commented: “You are about the same age as me. You don’t want to keep coming before the court…you need to address your issues, or you will continue on this revolving door.”

Agnew was sentenced to one month in prison for the offences before the court.
