Work on the long-anticipated Queen Macha mural at College Street in Armagh will begin later this month.
The mural will be painted by internationally recognised artist Megan Russell, known professionally as Peachzz.
The news has been welcomed by Lord Mayor Sarah Duffy.
She said: “We are thrilled to welcome an artist of Megan Russell’s calibre to our city, telling the story of Queen Macha in the heart of Armagh city.”
Having pushed for the project since its consultation stage two years ago, Councillor Duffy said the mural will bring vibrant colour and life to the city centre.
“This artwork celebrates strength, femininity, culture, and heritage. Queen Macha is more than mythology — she is central to our identity, giving Armagh its name and linking us to Emain Macha and our ancient roots.”
The project forms part of the National Lottery Heritage Funded Regeneration Programme and exemplifies the power of partnership at a local level.
“I want to thank my Sinn Féin colleagues, council members across the chamber, and the dedicated officers of Armagh Townscape Heritage who have worked to bring this vision to life.
“This mural will be a landmark for locals and visitors alike, enriching Armagh’s cultural landscape and shining a spotlight on the story of Emain Macha.
“Sinn Féin will continue to champion projects that celebrate our heritage, provide social and economic benefits and drive investment into our communities.”
