A provisional start date has been pencilled in for a new 3G pitch at Banbridge High School.
Work is set to commence this November/December, subject to planning approval.
Commenting, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart, said: “This is very welcome news and comes after a long campaign my colleagues and I have led to secure this much needed facility.
“With works now scheduled to start in November this year, subject to planning approval, we can very much look forward to watching this scheme progress to completion.
The DUP representative added: “I am committed to ensuring local schools have the very best facilities whether it be for academia or sport, and this is a really significant boost for Banbridge High School pupils and the provision of top class facilities in the area.”
Party colleagues Councillor Paul Greenfield and Alderman Junior McCrum added: “This really is a significant step forward on what has been a long running process.
“We have been committed to securing this provision and have worked closely with the previous Principal, Mr Bell and now the new principal Mrs Feeney, the Council to secure the building, running and maintenance of of a 3G pitch in conjunction with the school.
“I want to place on record my thanks for all those involved in the planning and delivery of this scheme.”
