Ratepayers in the ABC borough will see bills for the next financial year increase by 1.76%.
Last year’s rate was 0.4370.
The increase to that – which was agreed at a special meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council tonight (Tuesday) – will see the average household bill, payable from April, increase by around 65 or 66 pence a month.
The increase remains below that of inflation.
The money is used by council to cover a host of services, including street cleaning, waste collection and tourism, as well as being dictated by external factors beyond the control of local government.
The rise this year is almost twice the hike agreed last time round, when bills went up by 0.92%.
Last year’s business – or non-domestic rate – was 24.4252. The new figure will be 24.8541.
The rise, while significant, is still well below that agreed last night (Monday), in Newry, Mourne and Down.
The NMD council – which covers much of south Armagh – approved an increase of 2.66% – compared to 1.94% the previous year.
