The mother of a Bessbrook toddler who passed away two years ago has started a justgiving page to help provide a sensory room in his memory at Daisy Hill Hospital.
Clare McCabe’s son Harvey tragically lost his battle against a life-limiting condition two years ago today.
The heartbroken mother has been instrumental in trying to raise money since her agonising loss to thank all those at the hospital for everything which they had done – and to help others in the future.
Clare told Armagh I : “We are aiming to raise £20 000 and have around £15 000 from our previous events.
“Daisy Hill have no sensory room or anything like what we are doing. They are delighted with what I have achieved so far.
“The sensory room will be allocated on the new children’s ward which is due to open at the end of this year. I have been in touch with Daisy Hill and they have kept me very much involved on the design of the room and choosing the equipment that will be needed.
“Today is my baby boy Harvey’s second anniversary and this is to keep his memory alive.”
Harvey was born a healthy baby but, at the age of two, Clare noticed a few things had changed with him so took him to the doctor.
After many blood tests, appointments and admissions to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, she received the devastating news that her beautiful baby boy had a life-limiting condition called MLD.
Said Clare: “Most children diagnosed with this condition have a life expectancy of up to five years. However Harvey sadly died four months after I received the devastating news.
“My life has been completely changed and through the love and support of my family and the local community, I am determined to keep Harvey’s memory alive. As a way of remembering Harvey and to help children who require a specialised environment to experience a sense of happiness and enjoyment whilst in hospital , our campaign called ThumbsUpForHarvey is actively fundraising to build a new sensory room in Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.
“Presently, we are half way to our target through the support and generousity of the local community, however in order to reach our initial goal, we require your help.”
The sensory room will be uniquely designed to suit children of all abilities and specialised equipment will be provided.
Said Clare: “In order to make this sensory room as useful and helpful as possible, funding is required to buy the best possible equipment. Through giving children a sense of joy and happiness during their time in hospital, Harvey’s memory will be alive.”
