Business response praised after counterfeit currency bids thwarted

Vigilance has been urged by a local councillor after attempts were made to pass counterfeit notes in Newtownhamilton.

Sinn Fein’s Barra Ó Muirí has warned businesses and shopkeepers in the area to be alert, saying the attempts to rip off local people only came to light when staff in some of the premises contacted each other on Sunday night.

He says the PSNI were called and “several arrests have been made”.

Commending all involved for their vigilance and response, Councillor Ó Muirí said: “This is the right sort of community response to those thieves who are determined to steal from our homes and businesses.

“As the winter evenings are now upon us I would appeal to all communities to be extra vigilant, especially between now and Christmas, and to keep a close eye, not only on their own property and premises, but their neighbour’s, especially the elderly and more vulnerable.”
