Residents and business owners in Caledon facing almost three weeks of roadwork misery will have to endure a 14 mile diversion.
Killylea Road will be closed from today (Monday) until Wednesday, February 22.
However, TransportNI have moved to allay concerns that the diversion would cause those living locally to add an extra 48 miles to their daily journeys.
The Caledon Regeneration Partnership Facebook page posted on Saturday, ahead of the work which began this morning.
“Local businesses are worried about the impact on them and it appears there will be major disruption for anyone who comes through Caledon locally.
“It seems for some people that a local trip, which is normally a few miles or less, will become a 48 mile round trip. No-one seems to know what lorries, delivery companies, school buses, anyone travelling to Tynan surgery etc will do.”
A spokesman for the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said: “The closure of the Coolkill Road, Killylea Road Armagh is necessary for the health and safety of both contractors and the public whilst planned resurfacing works are undertaken.
“The diversion length is approximately 14 miles, which will add approximately 20 minutes to journey times.
“TransportNI has planned the works and traffic management arrangements to minimise any inconvenience, however drivers should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when planning their journey.
“Emergency vehicles will have access when necessary.”
Traffic is being diverted via the Main Street, Caledon, B45 Dyan Road, B115 Battleford Road, C185 Knappagh Road and A28 Killylea Road.
