An annual Camlough Christmas morning mountain climb has been described as a “chance to show solidarity with the Palestinian people”.
Sinn Féin Councillor Declan Murphy has extended an invite to the public to attend the climb, which will be used to raise funds for “the people of Gaza”.
The climb leaves the village at 9am on Christmas morning, gathering outside Doyle’s.
Councillor Murphy commented: “We must not stop talking about Palestine. Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 45,000 Palestinians and injured more than 106,000, while more than 10,000 are reported missing and likely buried under the rubble.
“Approximately 80% of Gaza’s territory remains under forced displacement orders by Israeli forces, with 1.9 million people, or 90% of the total population, having been internally displaced multiple times during the past year.”
He added: “Christmas Day unfortunately for the people of Gaza will not be a day of joy, but is set to be another day of Israeli bombardment, death, injury and fear.
“We will climb Camlough mountain (Sliabh gCuircin) on Christmas morning carrying in our hearts the people of Palestine and in solidarity with them. The ongoing campaign of genocide in Gaza by Israel must stop immediately.”
On return to the village, Café Mon Abri on the main street will be opened offering light refreshments free of charge.
