The attack of a popular Camlough Translink Busy Bus has been condemned by a local Councillor who has called it “reckless and mindless behaviour”.
Newry City Sinn Féin Councillor Aidan Mathers has strongly condemned the attack on the bus after a side window was smashed by a missile while travelling along the Camlough Road over the weekend.
Speaking following the incident, Councillor Mathers said: “I am deeply saddened by this latest attack on a vital service that the people of Newry need and deserve. A side window was smashed, leaving broken glass strewn across the bus.
“Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries, but it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt as a result of this reckless and mindless behaviour.”
The Sinn Féin representative said he had spoken with Translink management and expressed concern at the impact the attack will have on local transport services.
“I spoke with management this morning and was frustrated to learn that the local town centre service will be significantly affected while this vehicle is taken off the road for repairs. This bus provides an important service to many people in our community and its loss will be felt by those who rely on it.”
Councillor Mathers reiterated his condemnation of those responsible and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
“I totally condemn this anti-community activity. Those responsible have shown complete disregard for public safety and for the people who depend on this service every day.
“I would appeal to anyone with information about this incident to report it to the relevant authorities so that those responsible can be identified, apprehended and held accountable for their actions.”
This is the second incident of this type in the area within a six month period.
In December 2025, Cllr Mathers also condemned the “reckless actions” of youths who threw stones at a bus near Camlough causing damage to the window.
He previously accused those responsible as showing a blatant disregard for public safety and highlighted the loss of services to the local community while repairs are conducted.
