A cannabis factory has discovered at a house in south Armagh today (Thursday).
Shortly before noon, the PSNI carried out a search at a house in the Eden Valley area of Jonesborough.
Inspector Lorraine Dobson said: “Over 150 cannabis plants which appear to have been recently cultivated, and a large quantity of items associated with the cultivation of cannabis, were recovered.”
Inspector Dobson continued: “Local officers remain dedicated in taking drugs out of circulation and reducing the harm they cause to communities.
“I would continue to encourage anyone with any information about the sale and supply of illegal drugs in the community to contact police on 101 or ring the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Slieve Gullion Sinn Féin Councillor Mickey Larkin welcomed the news.
He said: “This afternoon I became aware of a PSNI operation at a house in Jonesborough village. The police informed me that they had uncovered a cannabis growing facility within a rented property.
“It appears that this had been running for a number of months and, although only one room was in use, there was enough equipment on site to extend to all the other rooms in the house.
“Certainly thousands of pounds worth of plants were recovered and destroyed.
“Local residents are shocked that this drug factory had been set up within their estate. Thankfully the diligence of the police has shut down what is essentially a threat to the health and wellbeing of the population.”
Sinn Féin Westminster candidate Mickey Brady also welcomed the seizure.
“Communities affected by the scourge of drugs will be heartened by this discovery,” he said.
“I’m sure they will join me in congratulating the PSNI on dismantling this factory and stopping its damaging product.
“I’d urge people across Newry and Armagh to remain vigilant and work with the PSNI to help remove drugs and drug dealers from our communities.”
