A charity swim event is due to take place early next month in the hope of raising thousands of pounds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The public are being invited to sign up and do their bit and raise money for this fantastic cause during the big event at the Waves Leisure Complex.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has given approval for the leisure complex to remain open after hours to accommodate the all day fundraiser.
It is being organised by the Lurgan Masters Swimming Club.
And the reason for planning the charity swim is outlined on the club website.
“These days there are few people who haven’t been touched by cancer. From 1948 Marie Curie have been there for people living with any terminal illness. They offer expert care, guidance and support, free of charge to more than 40,000 terminally ill people and their families each year, helping them get the most they can from life, in the time they have left.
“Our aim is to raise as much money as possible for this incredibly worthy charity.”
The swim takes place on Saturday, May 9.
The ACBCBC Council’s leisure services committee has given permission for Waves Leisure Complex to be opened outside normal operating hours for the swim to take place.
The event will take place during opening hours, where the club will book and pay for half a pool and will continue after normal opening hours when staff have volunteered in their own time to supervise the event to meet Health and Safety requirements at no cost to the council.
This event is identical to the very successful Olympic Swimathon, run by Lurgan Masters, which was approved by Craigavon Borough Council and raised £17,000 in 2012.
All money collected will be presented to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Participants can swim 1.5km, 2.5km or 5km and relay teams are welcome, or they can just jump in, swim a few lengths and raise a few pounds for the wonderful people at Marie Curie!
