Council clamps down on bin contamination

Recycling Inspectors in Craigavon Borough Council are stepping up their campaign to reduce bin contamination.

The key message is that green bins should only be used for recyclable dry materials.  This includes cardboard, paper and cans, but also includes certain plastics (shampoo, detergent, and drinks bottles as well as rinsed yoghurt pots and margarine tubs).

“Some items are repeatedly causing contamination,” said Recycling Inspector David Phillips, “the items we see causing problems most often are plastic food wrappers (crisp packets, biscuit wrappers and cellophane).  Householders should be aware that plastic bags, polystyrene (burger boxes or packaging), tissues/baby wipes/kitchen roll are not able to be recycled and are really inconveniencing both the household and the Council.”

Chair of Environmental Services, Councillor Ronnie Harkness explained the impact of the problem, “Bins containing the wrong materials will not be able to be emptied, the resident will have to remove the offending items and present the bin on the next scheduled green bin collection day.”

Residents should visit www.craigavon.gov.uk or contact a Recycling Officer on 028 3833 9031 for more information and advice.
