A teenager has been ordered to complete 80 hours of community service after stealing a bottle of Buckfast from a store.
Court heard the 19-year-old told police he could only remember parts of the incident as he had been drinking vodka and ‘Dragon Soop’.
Dean Watson, of Jubilee Heights in Dromore, pleaded guilty to theft at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Court heard that the offence occurred on October 1 during which the defendant stole a bottle of Buckfast valued at £8.19 from Supervalu in Dromore.
Watson was seen on CCTV putting the bottle down his trousers.
When interviewed, he made admission but said that he could only remember bits of the incident.
The defendant said this was due to him consuming vodka and ‘Dragon Soop’.
Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer asked Watson what ‘Dragon Soop’ was.
The defendant said it was a cocktail bought in a can.
Deputy District Judge Mateer commented that it was “probably full of caffeine and all sorts”.
Defence barrister Damien Halloran stated: “Mr Watson has plans to leave this jurisdiction to work overseas.”
The deputy district judge quipped: “I hope Dragon Soop isn’t available where he is going!”
Mr Halloran said: “This was a crime of opportunity. He thought he would get away with it.”
Deputy District Judge Mateer stated: “You will be required to do community service, you were convicted of theft on June 20 and this was on October 10.
“This makes me worry that you don’t take the court process seriously.”
Watson was sentenced to complete 80 hours of community service and ordered to pay £8.19 to Supervalu.
