Concern raised over management and maintenance at Brownlow Community Hub

Brownlow Hub

A Craigavon resident has voiced concern over the condition and management of the Brownlow Community Hub, claiming the building has fallen into a state of disrepair.

In a letter sent to Armagh I, the long-time user of the centre — who wished to remain anonymous — said they had been attending a group at the Hub every couple of weeks since it first opened 13 years ago.

However, they described witnessing “a significant decline in the condition and management of the building” over the past year.

“The roof is constantly leaking, and the general cleanliness of the centre — particularly the toilets — has deteriorated to an unacceptable level,” they wrote.

“Having worked in hospitality for many years and managed hundreds of staff during that time, I can confidently say I have never seen a building so poorly maintained.”

The ratepayer also expressed frustration at the reported management structure of the Hub.

“What concerns me even more is the fact that the centre reportedly has two managers, yet the standards continue to fall. As a ratepayer, I am appalled that our money is being spent in this way,” they said.

Despite the criticism, the writer emphasised that the Hub remains a “valuable asset to the community—when run properly”.

“I enjoy attending my group sessions and have always found some of the staff to be very kind and welcoming,” they added.

The resident has urged the council to review how the facility is being managed and to prioritise repairs.

“I urge the council to reconsider the management structure of the centre and, most importantly, to address the ongoing roof leak before someone gets injured. I raise these concerns not out of malice, but out of genuine concern for a place that has great potential and meaning to many in our community.”

A spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council said: “The Hub remains a vital and well-used community facility, managed in accordance with our established protocols to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all users.

“In relation to the roof leaks, significant repair works were completed last year to address this issue. Following this, Council invested in a full redecoration programme to refresh and update the facility. Disappointingly, new leaks have appeared following recent wet weather and this issue has been escalated to our Estates Team for assessment and repair. This work is currently being progressed.

“Staff continue to implement a regular cleaning rota across all areas of the centre. In light of recent concerns, we are conducting spot checks to reinforce expectations and ensure high standards are consistently maintained.”
