A Craigavon GAA Club have paid tribute to a valued “lifelong supporter” and influential key figure who had been engaged in its development since its formation almost 60 years ago.
That figure is former Offaly man, Robert ‘Bob’ McEvoym, who made Craigavon his home in later life.
Regrettably, Bob passed away on February 9 in Craigavon Area Hospital.
Paying tribute to the life of their esteemed member, Éire Óg CLG Craigavon – based on the Tullygally East Road – said: “It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Robert (Bob) McEvoy, a lifelong supporter of our club and a true Gael.
“Bob was involved in Éire Óg from the beginning and played a vital role in the club’s formation, acting as facilitator for our very first meeting in Arthur Campbell’s house back in 1969.
“From those early days on, his commitment to the club never wavered. He was an ever present face at our games, monthly quiz nights and race days.
“Bob lived an active and dedicated community life in Craigavon, serving as a councillor and being deeply involved in church life, as well as contributing widely across the Craigavon Parish. He embodied the core values of the GAA; community, service and pride in our culture throughout his life.
“Bob’s dedication, generosity and love for the club and the wider community will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by us all.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s family and friends at this difficult time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
One of Ireland’s most successful musical acts, Foster and Allen also took the time to pay tribute to Bob, describing him as their “most loyal fan and a good friend”.
Adding to the condolences and tributes, many have regarded Bob as “one of life’s gentlemen”, a good friend and neighbour.
Said one person: “Gutted to hear of Bob’s passing. Bob was one of life’s good guys and a real pillar of the Craigavon community and our club.
“A great gael and brilliant neighbour that always loved the craic. A Lismara legend that will be sorely missed. Thoughts with all the McEvoy clan during this really sad time. RIP Bob Mc.”
Bob’s funeral Mass will be held on Thursday (February 12) in St Anthony’s Church, Craigavon at 2pm with burial afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Derrymacash.
Donations in lieu, if desired, are for Evora Hospice Care, Newry via a fundraiser by James Tallon – who has committed to running the New York City Marathon in aid of the charity in November 2026 – or via donation box at the home.
