Patient doused with raw sewage after pipe leaks onto hospital bed

Health chiefs have issued an apology after a patient at Craigavon Area Hospital was doused with raw sewage.

It is understood that the patient was hit with sewage which had dripped from a pipe in the ceiling above a bedroom located on a hospital ward.

The patient was moved after the incident, which happened during the course of maintenance works which have been ongoing since last September.craigavon hospital big

The Southern Health Trust has described the incident “distressing” and has issued an apology.

The leak was being blamed on a blockage of an old sewer pipe, which is due to be replaced in the next number of weeks as part of the ongoing works.

The main hospital building sewage works are due to be completed with all pipes replaced by the end of next month.

Last September it had been reported there were a number of issues with the sewage pipes at the hospital and work was required to address these.

Work was due to have been completed by mid-December last year and Trust chiefs had warned of the potential for some disruption as all the necessary work was carried out as part of a phased approach.

Esther Gishkori, Southern Trust Director of Acute Services, said at the time the work was revealed: “Craigavon Area Hospital is over 40 years old and this essential work is necessary to upgrade the infrastructure and facilities in the hospital and address specific problems related to sewage.”
