‘Enough is enough’: Fly-tipping in Craigavon countryside lambasted as ‘disgraceful’

Several areas in Portadown have also been described as 'third world ghettos' with images revealing discarded furniture and bin bags jammed into crevices between walls

A mountain of illegally discarded rubbish on the outskirts of Craigavon has been branded “disgraceful” by a local councillor who has now reported the offence.

Sharing images of multiple bin bags, cardboard and all manner of detritus dumped at the side of the Monbrief Road, Councillor Jude Mallon said “enough is enough”.

It’s not the first time the area has been subjected to indiscriminate fly-tipping.

The Councillor said the dumping has now been reported, but it “shouldn’t be happening in the first place”.

“Bags of household waste dumped at the side of the road, right beside our countryside — it’s completely unacceptable. This kind of behaviour harms the environment, attracts vermin, and leaves the local community to deal with the mess,” he continued.

Encouraging the public to engage with Council to protect the environment, the Councillor urged the public to report information, adding: “We all have a role to play in keeping our area clean and respected. Enough is enough.”

Similarly, in Portadown repeated incidents of fly-tipping in residential areas is also being called out, with the area being regarded as a “third world ghetto”.

Pictures of the Portadown dumping

Accompanying a gallery of images, Facebook page Portadown Reaction Group said the photos revealed a “contempt and disregard” for some of the areas.

The images show bin bags jammed into crevices between walls, alleyways lined with discarded furniture and food packaging, cardboard boxes and plastic containers.

According to the group, the fly-tipping and increasing volumes of discarded waste is being seen around the Thomas Street/Cecil Street/Burnbrae Ave/Church Street/Hanover Street areas.

Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council have been contacted for comment.
