An event has been held in Craigavon to raise awareness around violence against women and girls and the local services available to support those at risk.
‘Eliminate the Violence for a New Beginning’ took place at Craigavon Civic Centre and was hosted by the ABC area Policing and Community Safety Partnerships (PCSP) in partnership with the PSNI.
Several support organisations were in attendance raising awareness and showcasing the services they offer.
A number of speakers including First Responder experience, Public Protection Branch, Crime Prevention Officer, White Ribbon NI and PCSP discussed the impact of violence against women and girls on individuals and families, as well as the importance of early intervention and prevention.
The event also included a panel discussion featuring all the speakers who can all provide support to those affected by violence against women and girls.
Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the services available in their community and speak to other local services who attended with stands and information.
Chair of ABC PCSP, councillor Clare McConville-Walker, commented: “We are honoured to host this important event. Violence against women and girls is a serious issue that affects far too many people in our community. We hope that this event will help raise awareness and encourage those who need help to seek it out.
“Tackling domestic abuse and violence in our borough remains a top priority for PCSP, which is why we are proud to host such an event bring together many organisations for a valuable day of networking and information sharing.”
Chief Inspector Green from the PSNI added: “PSNI statistics show that ABC Council area has the second highest level of domestic abuse crime in Northern Ireland, which brings into sharp focus the need for everyone and every organisation to play their part in helping all residents live their lives free from fear and abuse.
“We will continue to work closely with PCSP, council members and local organisations to deliver and support a range of initiatives, services and campaigns aimed at raising awareness of matters such as domestic abuse, violence, and stalking, as well as highlighting the help that is always available.”
