A man who was caught driving a car, which was a birthday present for his daughter, without insurance has been handed six penalty points.
The 50-year-old, of Sheepwalk Road, Lisburn pleaded guilty at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday to one count of driving whilst uninsured.
Court heard that on January 15, police stopped the defendant driving a Nissan Micra on the M1 heading towards Moira after it was flagged as being uninsured.
When stopped the defendant stated that he believed he was covered to drive the car by his own policy.
He attended Lisburn police station the following day with his insurance documents, however, upon investigation it was found that this did not cover him to drive the Micra.
Defence counsel explained that it was a mistake as he was covered on third party vehicles and had bought the car as a present for his daughter.
It was heard that the defendant was a school caretaker and had three live points from 2015, but no other previous to that.
District Judge Paul Copeland handed him six penalty points and ordered him to pay a fine of £200, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
