A judge has ordered that a man who stole four bottles of wine be referred to the Border Agency due to his significant record.

The 46-year-old, who claimed to have “very little recollection” of the incident, received a three-month prison sentence.

Andrejs Ivanovs, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to theft at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, via videolink from Maghaberry.

Prosecution outlined that on June 10, the defendant stole four bottles of wine from Asda to the value of £22.

District Judge Bernie Kelly commented: “By the looks of his record he is bound to be heading to the Border Agency; presumably this is a case which prosecution should make them aware of.”

Defence solicitor John McAtamney stated: “He is in custody also with regards to a burglary matter. He is currently of no fixed abode and has been in custody since the date of the offence.

“He instructs he has very little recollection of this incident but it is clear from the CCTV that it is him and he accepts that.

“It was a case that he has gone in and shoplifted alcohol, which has been a problem for him.

“He is estranged from his partner who is a resident in this country.”

Judge Kelly said: “Given credit for the length of time you have spent in custody and also taking into account your record, I have no option but to certify this offence as so serious it warrants the imposition of a custodial sentence.”

Ivanovs was sentenced to three months in prison for the offence.
