M1 to close at Craigavon junction to allow for ‘major’ £3 million resurfacing scheme

A portion of the M1 Eastbound at Craigavon will be closed for a period of two weeks to allow for £3million major resurfacing scheme.

The M1 Eastbound on-slip at Ballynacor Interchange, Craigavon (Junction 11) will be closed continuously from 8pm on Friday July 25 to 6am on Friday August 8 2025.

Traffic is being diverted via M1 Westbound to Birches Roundabout (Junction 12) and then back up M1 Eastbound towards Lurgan/Belfast during mainly daytime hours (at times when M1 Eastbound Main Line is not fully closed).

M1 Eastbound Main Line between Ballynacor Interchange, Craigavon (Junction 11) and Lurgan Roundabout (Junction 10) will be reduced to a single lane continuously from 8pm on Friday July 25, to 6am on Friday August 8, 2025 (at times when M1 Eastbound Main Line is not fully closed).

M1 Eastbound Main Line between Ballynacor Interchange, Craigavon (Junction 11) and Lurgan Roundabout (Junction 10) will be fully closed through the night each night from Friday July 25 to Friday August 8, 2025, with traffic being diverted via M12 Motorway, (A3) Kernan Loop, (A3) Northway, (A3) Central Way, (A3) Lake Road, (U1125) Eastway, (B2) Silverwood Road, (C706) Kiln Road, (A76) Lough Road, and Junction 10 Lurgan Roundabout.

A temporary speed limit of 50 mph speed limit will also be imposed along the stretch and overtaking will be prohibited.

Minister Kimmins said: “This is a very significant investment in our motorway network which demonstrates my commitment to improving our road infrastructure and will bring significant benefits for road users.

“I would like to thank the travelling public in advance for their cooperation while these much-needed works are complete and appeal for everyone to please slow down, be patient and abide by all temporary traffic management arrangements.”

The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience however some delays can be expected and road users are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to follow the alternative routes which will be clearly signed on the approaches to the closure.

Completion of the work by 8 August 2025 is subject to favourable weather conditions, however, the Department will keep the public informed of any change.

Closure hours will vary each night as per below:

M1 Eastbound Total Closure on Friday nights (July 25 and August 1) from 8pm to 7am.

M1 Eastbound Total Closure on Saturday nights (July 26 and August 2) from 8pm to 12pm (Sunday midday).

M1 Eastbound Total Closure from Sunday nights to Thursday nights (July 27 – 31 and August 3 – 7) from 8pm to 6am each night.

Please note that M1 Westbound will not be closed at any time.

These closures are to facilitate essential M1 carriageway resurfacing work by Amey.
