A Portadown man has been left “teetering on the brink” of disqualification after being handed three penalty points for driving a car with several defects.
Brian Bassett, of Bocombra Manor, pleaded guilty to driving a car with two defective tyres and a defective braking system at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Wednesday.
Court heard the 40-year-old was stopped by police on June 1 driving a red Audi on Avenue Road, Lurgan.
It was noted by officers that the front tyres of the vehicle were worn and concerning noises were coming from the rear of the car.
The vehicle was seized, and checks showed that the braking system was defective with there were also problems with the struts which may have caused the noises.
Defence solicitor Richard Monteith said Bassett was “embarrassed to be in court and that he had let his vehicle be in such a condition”.
He added that the defendant worked in agriculture and should be “much more conscious of the condition of vehicles”.
It was revealed that the car subsequently passed its MOT a short time afterwards and that Bassett currently had three penalty points on his licence.
Mr Monteith commented that any points now would leave the defendant “teetering on the brink”.
Bassett had three penalty points placed on his licence and was ordered to pay a fine of £225, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 10 weeks.
