A man is to appeal against a three-month disqualification he received for speeding at 100mph on the M1.
Sentencing the 31-year-old, the district judge commented: “Once you hit that speed on the motorway there is only one way to inform the public that it is unacceptable.”
Sean Nelson, of Moira Road in Glenavy, pleaded guilty to excess speed at Craigavon Magistrates’ on Friday.
Prosecution outlined that on May 26, police detected the defendant travelling at 100mph in an Audi A5 on the M1.
Defence counsel informed the court that Nelson appeared with no record and a clean licence.
He added: “He has attended court today and understands the gravity of the offence. He is also positive that he will be able to pay any fine.
“I would ask that your worship consider imposing penalty points as opposed to a disqualification.”
District Judge Bernie Kelly stated: “All of those things would normally be a good basis for a plea, but once you hit that speed on the motorway there is only one way to inform the public that it is unacceptable”.
Nelson was disqualified from driving for a period of three months and was ordered to pay a fine of £120, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
Defence counsel stated they had been instructed to apply for bail to appeal in the event of a disqualification.
District Judge Kelly granted bail to appeal at £250, but did not grant permission to drive pending that.
