A Dollingstown man who was caught driving without having ever sat the test has been told his wife’s car could be forfeited.
The judge told the 37-year-old: “I don’t know why you would do this to your wife, it was her hard earned cash that paid for this car”.
Edward Honeyford, of Holly Hill, pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without insurance, excess speed and no driving licence at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecution outlined that in July 11, at 7.50pm, police carrying out speed detections on the Kernan Road, Portadown, observed a Skoda Rapid travelling at 42mph in a 30mph zone.
Officers spoke to the driver, who identified themselves as the defendant.
Honeyford was unable to provide his licence to police and later checks showed that he was not insured to drive this vehicle.
During a notebook interview,the defendant admitted to having no insurance or licence, having never sat the test.
Honeyford, who represented himself, told court: “I apologise, it was very foolish”.
District Judge Bernie Kelly stated: “I want your wife to issued to come here on October 25 to make representations as to why I should not forfeit her vehicle.
“You cannot do this, if you have not sat the test you cannot do what people who sat the test do”.
She added: “You cannot simply take your wife’s car, she is at risk of losing it.
“I don’t know why you would do this to your wife, it was her hard earned cash that paid for this car”.
Honeyford was disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay a fine of £400, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within four weeks.
