‘Modest fine’ for man who failed to stop for police for ‘no reason’

The district judge said: 'It would appear he had no reason not to stop so I am going to deal with him by way of a modest fine'

A Craigavon man who failed to stop for police for “no reason” has been handed a £60 fine.

The 30-year-old’s solicitor told court: “He is not charged with anything else. He instructs that he simply did not see the police.”

Philip Gerard Gentle, of Limefield Crescent, pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Prosecution outlined that on August 22, at 4.15pm, police on Limefield Crescent spotted a Volkswagen Golf with two occupants.

Officers activated lights and sirens to signal the car to stop but it continued onto Hillcrest Manor. By the time the vehicle came to a stop only the defendant, the driver, was present.

Gentle subsequently gave a no comment interview to police.

Defence solicitor Chris Logue stated: “He is not charged with anything else. He instructs that he simply did not see the police.”

District Judge Amanda Brady commented: “It would appear he had no reason not to stop so I am going to deal with him by way of a modest fine.”

Gentle was ordered to pay a fine of £60, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 15 weeks.
