Motion urges ‘lasting tribute’ in borough to women who served as UDR Greenfinches

His motion asks that this "council recognises the significant contribution that women have made and continues to make in the defence of our great nation".

There have been calls for a lasting tribute to be considered in the borough to the women who served in the Ulster Defence Regiment.

A motion calling for such recognition will go before Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for consideration on Monday night.

It is being brought by former Lord Mayor, Ulster Unionist councillor Glenn Barr.

He wants some form of recognition for the UDR women – known as ‘Greenfinches’ – to be made and will be seeking the support of council colleagues.

His motion asks that this “council recognises the significant contribution that women have made and
continues to make in the defence of our great nation”.

And it adds: “The Ulster Defence Regiment Bill received Royal Assent on 18th July 1973 which enabled the recruitment of women to the Ulster Defence Regiment.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council recognises the significant impact that the Greenfinches had in the defeat of terrorism in Northern Ireland and in conjunction with the Regimental Association of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC will recognise and honour the sacrifice they made.

Council will explore a lasting tribute to the Greenfinches of the Ulster Defence Regiment CGC.”
