Once ‘beating heart’ of borough only ticking over as Civic Centre just one festive booking

“I remember some years ago this building was a vibrant building in the run up to Christmas between concerts, dinners and whatever."

Calls have gone out for greater effort to promote the use of Craigavon Civic Centre to external organisations after it was revealed it has only got one booking over the whole Christmas period.

DUP Alderman Stephen Moutray told the last monthly meeting that it was time ABC Council worked to ensure the building took its rightful place as “the vibrant beating heart of this borough”.

“It has come to my notice that this great building, Craigavon Civic Centre, will only be used once this Christmas season for a Christmas dinner by an organisation from outside,” he said.

“I remember some years ago this building was a vibrant building in the run up to Christmas between concerts, dinners and whatever.

“In fact, I would like to see that we get this building back to what it was and what it should be, the beating vibrant heart of the borough.”

He told the meeting in the chamber that, as chair of council’s, governance, resources and strategy committee, he has requested a report be brought to December’s meeting detailing how the building is currently being utilised.

“I, as Chair of the committee, have asked that a full detailed report is brought to the next committee meeting in relation to how the building is being utilised in the evenings,” he said.

“It is imperative that we as elected members and officers work to find a way that not only showcases this building but find a way to utilise it to its full potential and undertake to ensure the best value for the ratepayer.”
