Patrols in Portadown to increase as efforts to combat nuisance fly-tipping ramp up

The Council have said they plan to increase patrols after a rake of illegal dumping across the Portadown area was highlighted by Armagh I.

Fly-tipping has become the constant bugbear of residents in both areas in recent months.

Sharing images of multiple bin bags, cardboard and all manner of detritus dumped at the side of the Monbrief Road, in Craigavon Councillor Jude Mallon said “enough is enough”.

The Councillor said the dumping has now been reported, but it “shouldn’t be happening in the first place”.

“Bags of household waste dumped at the side of the road, right beside our countryside — it’s completely unacceptable. This kind of behaviour harms the environment, attracts vermin, and leaves the local community to deal with the mess,” he continued.

Similarly, in Portadown repeated incidents of fly-tipping in residential areas is also being called out, with the area being regarded as a “third world ghetto”.

Increasing volumes of discarded waste is being seen around the Thomas Street/Cecil Street/Burnbrae Ave/Church Street/Hanover Street areas, to name a few.

The scourge of abandoned rubbish is not only unsightly but can have a harmful impact on the environment and residents’ quality of life.

When contacted for comment, a spokesperson for Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council said: “Following reports of fly‑tipping in the Portadown area, Council officers have visited the site to assess the discarded waste and look for any evidence that may help identify those responsible.

“Arrangements have been made for the material to be removed at the earliest available opportunity. Further patrols will take place in the coming weeks and months to monitor this location.”

Councillor Jude Mallon has also requested that any members of the public who have information relating to those who may be responsible to pass this on to Council to help inform their investigations.
