It has since transpired that the premises next door to the chip shop – a hairdressing salon – had also been broken into.

The man has been arrested and is currently in custody charged with two burglaries, going equipped and causing criminal damage.

He is due to appear in court in the morning.

Police have hailed the member of the public who reported the burglary as an “alert local hero”.

And via social media, they appealed to anyone finding themselves in a similar situation to do likewise.

“With the number of burglaries across our district recently, the amount of times people only report suspicious activity after the fact is staggering,” they said.

“If you see anything that could be a break in in progress, get on the 999! For any other suspicious activity, call 101. Don’t forget these people break into our own homes too. We want to catch them as much as you want them caught!”
