Summer is a season of new adventures and much-needed breaks from the everyday grind but for families of children with disabilities, summer can also bring challenges, especially when routines change.
Check out getactiveabc’s range of inclusive activities to see you through the summer season.
South Lake Watersports: Make a splash or hit the trail with an exciting range of inclusive activities at South Lake Watersports Centre in Craigavon. Have a go at paddlesports, jump onboard the wheelyboat, get wheeling with inclusive cycling and bike hire, learn to hit the target with archery sessions or make a big splash with the aqua park inflatable! These fun and accessible activities are suitable for all ages and abilities.
Accessible inflatable sessions: Let the kids (4 years+) bounce around with the one-hour accessible inflatable sessions available at Rathfriland Community Centre and Keady Recreation Centre throughout July and August (bookings will open 8 days before the session for getactiveabc members and 4 days before for non- members).
Swimming lessons and quiet hour swims: Additional needs 1:1 swimming lessons are available at Orchard Leisure Centre to support children with disabilities in building swimming skills and confidence. Quiet swim sessions are also available across Banbridge, Orchard and South Lake Leisure Centres, offering a calming and welcoming environment for individuals with additional needs (free access) and their families (free to getactiveabc family and single members).
In partnership with Disability Sport NI and as part of Get Moving ABC, there is the opportunity to sign up for a three-day ‘Inclusive Summer Scheme’ and ‘All Out Trekking’ at Gosford Forest Park!
Inclusive summer scheme: The inclusive summer scheme promotes physical activity, social connection, emotional growth, skill-building and fun among children and young people with disabilities (siblings and friends can join too!).
The scheme will run at Banbridge and Orchard Leisure Centres during July and August, with a junior (7-11 years) and senior scheme (12-19 years) available.
All out trekking: ‘All Out Trekking’ is a great way to explore Gosford! The all-terrain buggies are suitable for disabled and non-disabled riders, enabling inclusive participation in a beautiful parkland setting (every Thursday and Saturday throughout July to September). All sessions are guided by trained staff and bespoke packages can be organised for larger groups.
