Teen who attacked paramedic and damaged ambulance equipment given suspended jail term

'You are heading down a very slippery slope. You are going to end up on the street, or worse, in Maghaberry'

A Craigavon teenager who attacked a paramedic and damaged ambulance equipment has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

A district judge warned the 19-year-old that he was “heading down a slippery slope” with his likely destination being the streets or Maghaberry.

Conor Watt, of Garrymore, was charged with two counts of disorderly behaviour, assaulting an ambulance worker, criminal damage and common assault at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Friday.

The defendant appeared after sentencing for the offences, which occurred in September 2017, had previously been deferred.

District judge Bernie Kelly commented: “He should know by now that he should not be drinking.”

Defence barrister Ciara Ennis stated that Watt had been able to adhere to his bail conditions and told the court that the defendant was now living with family friends.

District Judge Kelly told the teenager: “You are heading down a very slippery slope. You are going to end up on the street, or worse, in Maghaberry.

“Nobody wants you in their home while you continue to drink.”

Watt was sentenced to three months in prison suspended for 18 months.

District Judge Kelly stated: “This is on order to give you an incentive not to drink and to stay out of trouble.”
